This is false. There are a wide variety of naturally-occurring intersex conditions that cannot be classified as either female (XX) or male (XY). Some intersex people are born with XO, XXY, XYY, and other chromosomal configurations that differ from the (XX = female) and (XY = male) binary that is imposed to regulate social interactions. Many intersex people receive involuntary "corrective" surgeries early in life because of how threatening non-binary sex is for Western society. Here's some more information in case you're interested in learning more about this: https://isna.org/faq/what_is_intersex/

Also, being male is not the same as being a man…

The monkey leaving after I took out my camera to photograph it.

In the span of two days I was nuzzled by a pig, kissed by a deer, greeted by a monkey, humped by a dog, and unknowingly provided shelter to a moth in my hat while visiting a rural town deep in the mountains of South America. The first three of these encounters occurred at a zoo where geese and parrots loudly proclaimed dissatisfaction toward human onlookers including myself whose smirk in relation to their captivity perhaps resembled the way sadistic abusers emote while asserting power over their targets.

I, a white American tourist referred to as el gringo by someone…

“What do you think it would be like to live in a world that isn’t structured against us?” I ask my partner after a group of teenagers taunt us; one of them made an effeminate jeer when we began walking away and the rest of the group laughed.

“I don’t know…” he says, confused by my question.

“This world does not accept our love and there is nothing we can do to change it.” He is silent, perhaps speechless. “How do you not care about what other people think?” I inquire, remembering him describing how he does what he wants…

I say that I am in no rush to be with him in person even though I think about being with him on a continual basis. I encourage him not to worry about me because I am more experienced with relationships than he is and will be strong for us as he navigates the anxiety of his first romantic relationship. We have been dating long distance for a year and tomorrow he is coming to visit his family down the street for three months. We have never met in person before but our souls are intimately woven together in beautiful…

An erection that lasts longer than four hours is a medical problem and yet some men act hard their entire lives.

I would like to believe that there is more to being a man than acting like a dick but I am unfortunately unable to reach this conclusion.

If sex is the same as gender (i.e., if penis = male = man and vagina = female = woman), then being a man or a woman is based in acting like genitals. This notion is of course perverse and absurd but so is the fact that you can see someone get killed on American television but you cannot see nudity.

We are a sick society that considers bodies to be more dangerous…

My roommate invites me into his room and I automatically sit on the floor with my back against the wall. Others sit upon his bed and ask with concern whether I want to join them but I do not and say I’m fine sitting on the floor. I feel a strange mixture of fear and embarrassment in relation to the thought of sitting on his bed even though my back and legs are aching. I pretend to be comfortable and engaged in conversation until my hips throb so ominously that I return to my room. I sit comfortably on my…

Donald Trump actually is great in terms of the culture of depravity that he represents. (via)

Donald Trump is our nation’s biggest inspiration; we cannot stop thinking or talking about him. He inspires a wide range of sentiments, from fervid devotion to abject hatred and horrified bemusement. He stands for and proudly boasts what previous presidents could only sit behind closed doors to discuss.

He’s a white savior to conservatives and evil demon to liberals because he speaks to all of our vices and alleged virtues. Conservatives don’t see his faults because he twists them into virtues that they then worship in a cult of narcissistic personality, while liberals only see his faults and use his…

Working overnight in a warehouse handling packages for FedEx this past year has taught and helped me grow a lot. I experienced the warehouse environment as a microcosm of American society that reflects the broader race and gender relations that structure our world, and as a result have come to see my whiteness and queerness more clearly. Working for FedEx has changed me for the better, and I would like to share how my learning and growing took place.

The Workload

Package handling for FedEx is a very physically demanding job that requires significant amounts of strength and endurance. Shifts typically involve…

Understanding the Origins of White (Mis)Behaviors

The murder of George Floyd by police officers on May 25th, 2020 has sparked worldwide protests against racism and police brutality that are ushering in a new era of civil rights activism. Never before have so many people from different sociocultural backgrounds collectively participated in racial justice activism. Racism is shifting from being understood by white people as a Black person’s problem to a systemic form of oppression that is actively maintained by whiteness and implicates every single white person. White people are starting to catch onto the stark inequalities, injustices, and ritualized acts of domination and cruelty that maintain…

White supremacy can be understood as an ideological structure that aims to make whiteness superior to every other form of social difference. Whiteness is not superior to anything, however, and nor are white people better than anyone else. White supremacy is therefore false and always fails its aim of conferring genuine white superiority. White (mis)behaviors can thus be understood as attempts to maintain illusions of white superiority and guard against the loss of a superiority that doesn’t exist.

An illusion of superiority can be maintained by devaluing others and/or overvaluing oneself. “Negative” white supremacy involves devaluing the non-white Other, and…
